Connecting a laptop to a Clevertouch screen with HDMI and USB

Please note: this is independent guidance. Vision Tech is not affiliated with Clevertouch. Menus and features differ between models and software versions, so check your screen's own manual or on-screen help, and speak to your school IT team or supplier before changing admin-locked settings, updating firmware or doing a factory reset.

The usual way to show your laptop on an interactive screen is an HDMI lead for the picture and sound, plus a USB lead so you can use touch on the laptop. Both are needed for full touch control.

What you need

  • An HDMI lead from the laptop to one of the screen's HDMI sockets
  • A USB lead from the laptop to the screen's USB touch socket, if you want to control the laptop by touch
  • An adaptor if your laptop has no full-size HDMI or USB socket, such as a USB-C adaptor

Many rooms already have leads fitted to a desk or wall plate. Use those if so.

Connect the picture

  1. Plug the HDMI lead into the laptop.
  2. Plug the other end into an HDMI socket on the screen. Note its number, such as HDMI 1.
  3. Press Input or Source on the remote or screen and select the same HDMI number.
  4. If the picture does not appear, on a Windows laptop press the Windows key and P, then choose Duplicate.

Connect touch back

  1. Plug the USB lead into the laptop.
  2. Plug the other end into the screen's USB socket for touch. The label depends on your model, so check what is printed next to the socket or in the manual.
  3. Wait a few seconds. The laptop may show a message about setting up a device.
  4. Touch the screen and see if the cursor follows your finger.

If touch does not work

Make sure the USB lead is in the touch socket, not a general USB socket meant for memory sticks. Try another USB port on the laptop. On a work laptop, some USB devices may be blocked by your organisation, in which case ask IT.

When to get more help

If the picture works but touch never does on any laptop, or the screen does not detect the laptop at all, ask for help. Your IT team can check the wall plate, leads and laptop settings. If the screen is managed by your school or company, some settings may be locked. Your IT team or the supplier you bought the screen from can help with warranty, firmware and admin-locked settings.

Did this help? If you are still stuck, email Vision Tech and tell us what you can see on the screen. Menus and button names can differ slightly between versions and makes. If something does not match, stop and ask rather than guess.
