Using a visualiser or document camera with an interactive screen
A visualiser, also called a document camera, lets you show a book, a worksheet or an experiment on the big screen. It is a good tool for demonstrating work without scanning it first.
Connecting with HDMI
- Plug the visualiser's power lead in and switch it on.
- Connect an HDMI lead from the visualiser to an input on the screen or the room's wall plate.
- On the screen, press Input or Source and choose the matching HDMI input.
Connecting with USB
If the visualiser connects by USB, you may need an app on a laptop or on the screen. If your screen allows it, a camera app or similar may be available. Not every screen supports USB visualisers directly, so ask IT if you are unsure.
Getting a good picture
- Place the item flat and under the camera.
- Use the visualiser's own light, if it has one, to reduce shadows.
- Use the focus or auto-focus button, usually on the visualiser itself.
- Use the zoom to make small writing readable.
- Place dark paper under thin pages.
If there is no picture
- Check power and the input source.
- Check the lead.
- Try another HDMI socket.
- See our guide on no signal.
When to get more help
If the camera is not recognised, the picture is blurry even after cleaning, or the arm is loose, contact your IT team or supplier. If the screen is managed by your school or company, some settings may be locked. Your IT team or the supplier you bought the screen from can help with warranty, firmware and admin-locked settings.
