Samsung keyboard problems: typing lag, predictive text and wrong words

The Samsung Keyboard learns from what you type, which is handy, but it can pick up bad habits or lag. Here is how to tidy it up.

Quick fixes

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Update the keyboard: open the Galaxy Store or Play Store, search for Samsung Keyboard, and update it if offered.
  3. Clear its cache. Go to Settings, Apps, tap Samsung Keyboard (you may need to tap the filter icon and show system apps), tap Storage, then Clear cache.

Open the keyboard settings

  1. Open Settings and tap General management.
  2. Tap Samsung Keyboard settings.

Alternatively, tap the cog icon at the top of the keyboard while typing.

Predictive text and autocorrect

  • Turn Predictive text on or off here. Switching it off stops word suggestions.
  • Tap Auto replace or Auto correct to change how it fixes mistakes.
  • To remove a bad suggestion, press and hold the word in the suggestions bar and drag it to the bin if shown.
  • Reset to default settings puts the keyboard back as it came. It does not touch your photos or messages.

Other things that help

  • If the keyboard is too small, find Size and transparency to make it larger.
  • If you type in two languages, add the second one under Languages and types.
  • Turn off Keyboard sounds and vibration if they bother you.
  • If a different keyboard appeared, go to Settings, General management, Keyboard list and default and choose Samsung Keyboard.

Cautions

Learned words are stored on the phone. Resetting the keyboard may delete words you have taught it, and some wording differs slightly by model and One UI version.

Be careful with free keyboard apps from advert links, as keyboards can see everything you type, including passwords.

When to get more help

If the keyboard disappears, keeps crashing or lags in every app, ask us. We can check for an update or app clash.

Did this help? If you are still stuck, email Vision Tech and tell us what you can see on the screen. Menus and button names can differ slightly between versions and makes. If something does not match, stop and ask rather than guess.
