My TV will not turn on
A TV that will not switch on can be alarming, but the cause is often simple. This guide helps you check the power, the remote and the standby light before you think about repairs.
Look at the standby light
The little light on the front or bottom of the TV tells you a lot. It differs by brand, so check your manual if you have it.
- No light at all: the TV is not getting power.
- Red or white light on: the TV has power and is in standby, so the remote or power button may be the problem.
- Light flashing: the TV may be trying to start up or reporting a fault. Count the flashes and write the number down.
If there is no light
- Check the plug is pushed fully into the wall socket and the switch is on.
- Try a different socket with a lamp or phone charger you know works.
- If the TV is plugged into an extension lead or surge protector, plug it straight into the wall instead.
- Check the fuse in the plug if it has one.
If there is a light but no picture
- Replace the remote control batteries with fresh ones.
- Press the power button on the TV itself, usually found on the back, underneath or on a small joystick.
- If the TV comes on with the button but not the remote, see our remote control guide.
Do a power drain
- Unplug the TV from the wall.
- Hold the TV's power button for 15 to 20 seconds.
- Leave it unplugged for five minutes.
- Plug back in and try again.
Other causes
- A software update may have been running. Wait 10 minutes if the light is flashing.
- Very cold or damp rooms can stop a TV starting. Let it warm up.
- After a power cut or surge, the TV's power board can fail.
When to get more help
If there is still no sign of life after a power drain and a different socket, or you hear clicking, smell burning or see the light blinking in a pattern, stop and ask for help. Do not open the TV yourself.
