Infinite canvas and recording a lesson on an interactive screen
Some interactive screens let you work on a canvas that keeps growing, and some can record what happens on the screen. Both depend on the model and software, so check your own screen before planning a lesson around them.
The infinite canvas
An infinite or endless canvas means that you are not limited to one screenful. You can keep writing and scroll or drag the page in any direction. This is good for mind maps, timelines and brainstorming.
- Open your whiteboard app and look for a canvas, infinite page or similar option in the menu or page settings. If you cannot find one, your version may not have it.
- Write or add items as normal.
- When you reach the edge, use two fingers to drag the canvas, or use the hand or move tool if there is one.
- Zoom out to see the whole thing and zoom in to read details.
Keep related ideas close together and use colour to separate topics.
Recording a lesson
Many screens have a screen recording tool, either built into the system or as a feature of the whiteboard app. Look for a record icon in the side toolbar, quick settings or the app menu.
- Open what you want to teach from.
- Start the recording and check if your screen asks about microphone use.
- Teach as normal.
- Stop the recording and see where the video has been saved.
- Copy it to a USB stick or upload it to your school's approved storage.
Things to check before recording
- Permission and safeguarding. Do not record pupils' faces or voices unless your school policy and consent arrangements allow it.
- Private information. Close emails, registers and notifications first.
- Storage. Videos can be large. Delete them from the screen once saved elsewhere.
- Sound. Test a short clip first to check the voice is clear.
When to get more help
If you cannot find a record option, the recording has no sound, or the video will not play afterwards, ask IT. Tell them how you started the recording and where you looked for the file.
