How to set up a new Echo Show step by step

An Echo Show is an Echo with a screen. Most of the setup is done on the screen itself, with the Alexa app helping to link it to your account.

Before you start

Have your Wi-Fi password and Amazon login ready. Plug the Show into the wall using its own power adapter and place it where it has room, ideally on a shelf or worktop rather than inside a cupboard.

Setting it up

  1. Plug in the Echo Show and wait for it to start. The screen will show a welcome message.
  2. Tap your Wi-Fi network from the list on the screen.
  3. Type the Wi-Fi password and tap to connect.
  4. Sign in with your Amazon account. The Show may display a code or a QR code to scan with your phone, or ask for your email and password. Follow what is on screen.
  5. The device may download an update and restart. Leave it alone while it does this.
  6. Work through the remaining screens, such as time zone and home screen choices.

On Echo screen devices, Wi-Fi settings are normally changed on the device itself, not in the app.

Camera and privacy

Most Echo Shows have a way to cover or switch off the camera, and a button to switch off the microphones. Look for a sliding shutter or a camera button on the device, and a microphone button on top. Check your model's booklet if you cannot find them.

Making it useful

Open the Alexa app, tap Devices, find your Show and give it a name and a room. Then try, "Alexa, show me the weather" or "Alexa, set a timer for ten minutes".

When to get more help

If the Show cannot join your Wi-Fi, will not sign in to your account or stays stuck on a loading screen, ask for help rather than repeatedly resetting it. A factory reset erases all its settings and you would have to start again.

Did this help? If you are still stuck, email Vision Tech and tell us what you can see on the screen. Menus and button names can differ slightly between versions and makes. If something does not match, stop and ask rather than guess.
