How to pair an Echo with a Bluetooth speaker or your phone

An Echo can play music from your phone over Bluetooth, or send its own sound to a separate Bluetooth speaker. Both are set up with a spoken command.

Play your phone through the Echo

  1. On your phone, open Bluetooth settings and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  2. Say, "Alexa, pair." Alexa will say it is ready to pair.
  3. On your phone, look in the list of available devices for your Echo's name and tap it.
  4. Alexa will confirm that it is connected.

Now any sound from your phone plays through the Echo. To disconnect, say, "Alexa, disconnect".

Send Echo sound to another speaker

  1. Put your Bluetooth speaker into pairing mode. The speaker's booklet shows how, often by holding a button until a light flashes.
  2. Open the Alexa app and tap Devices, select your Echo, then look in Device Settings for Bluetooth devices. Menu names in the Alexa app change from time to time, so if yours looks slightly different, look for the closest wording rather than worrying.
  3. Choose the option to pair a new device and select the speaker.

Not all Echo models can send their sound to another Bluetooth speaker, and the Echo may then not hear commands as well. Check the instructions for your model.

If it will not pair

  • Forget the Echo on your phone, and then pair again.
  • Keep devices within a metre of each other.
  • Make sure the speaker is not already connected to another phone.
  • Restart the Echo.

Good to know

Bluetooth audio from a phone does not need Wi-Fi, so it can still work if the internet is down, but Alexa voice commands will not.

When to get more help

If your Echo keeps connecting to a neighbour's phone or your phone will not see it, ask for help. Vision Tech can check the settings and tidy up old paired devices.

Did this help? If you are still stuck, email Vision Tech and tell us what you can see on the screen. Menus and button names can differ slightly between versions and makes. If something does not match, stop and ask rather than guess.
