How to clean a Samsung TV screen safely

A TV screen scratches and marks easily, so gentle cleaning is best. Do this when the TV is off and cool.

What to use

  • A clean, dry microfibre cloth. A glasses or camera cloth is ideal
  • A second cloth lightly dampened with water, if needed

Manufacturers generally advise a soft dry cloth and no harsh products. Check your manual for details about your model, as some screens have special coatings.

Before you start

  1. Switch the TV off and unplug it.
  2. Wait a few minutes for it to cool down.
  3. Take off any rings or watches that could scratch the screen.

How to clean

  1. Wipe the screen gently from top to bottom with the dry microfibre cloth, using light pressure.
  2. For stubborn marks, use the cloth lightly dampened with water only. It should not be wet or dripping.
  3. Wipe again with the dry cloth.
  4. Let the screen dry fully before you plug the TV in.

Things to avoid

  • Do not spray liquid directly on the screen. It can run into the edges and damage the TV.
  • Do not use glass cleaner, alcohol, window cleaner, cleaning wipes, kitchen paper or abrasive cloths.
  • Do not press hard, especially on one spot, as this can mark the screen.
  • Do not use hot water or steam.

The frame, back and vents

Wipe the frame with a soft dry or barely damp cloth. Use a dry cloth or a soft brush to remove dust from the back and vents. Do not poke anything into vents or sockets.

The remote

Wipe the remote with a dry or barely damp cloth, and avoid getting liquid into the buttons.

If a mark does not come off

Some marks, such as pressure marks or burn-in, are inside the screen and cannot be cleaned. See our guide on lines and dead pixels.

When to get more help

If liquid has got into the TV or the screen has a crack, unplug it and do not turn it on. Vision Tech can help you decide the safest next step.

Did this help? If you are still stuck, email Vision Tech and tell us what you can see on the screen. Menus and button names can differ slightly between versions and makes. If something does not match, stop and ask rather than guess.
