Fire TV Stick storage full: how to clear space and cache

Fire Sticks have limited storage. When it fills up, apps slow down, crash or refuse to install. Clearing out apps you no longer use usually sorts it.

See what is using space

  1. Press Home on the remote and go to Settings.
  2. Choose Applications, then Manage Installed Applications. Menu names in the Alexa app change from time to time, so if yours looks slightly different, look for the closest wording rather than worrying.
  3. You should see how much storage is used and a list of apps.

Clear the cache

The cache holds temporary files. Clearing it is safe and does not delete your account.

  1. In the list of apps, choose the app that is misbehaving, such as Netflix or BBC iPlayer.
  2. Choose Clear cache.
  3. Open the app again.

There is also a Clear data option. This signs you out of the app and removes its settings, so use it only if clearing the cache did not help. You will need your login for that app again.

Remove apps you do not use

  1. In the same list, choose an app you never use.
  2. Choose Uninstall and confirm.

Do not remove anything you are unsure about, especially things that look like system apps.

Other tips

  • Restart the Fire Stick.
  • Keep fewer apps. Games are often large.
  • Do not install apps from unknown sources. This can bring risk, and we advise against switching off security settings to do it.

When to get more help

If you have removed apps and space is still short, you may need a different model with more storage. Vision Tech can advise on this.

Did this help? If you are still stuck, email Vision Tech and tell us what you can see on the screen. Menus and button names can differ slightly between versions and makes. If something does not match, stop and ask rather than guess.
