Chromebook: using Android apps and Google Play
Many newer Chromebooks can install Android apps from the Google Play Store, such as games and other tools. Not every Chromebook supports this, and managed Chromebooks may block it.
Is Google Play available?
- Open Settings.
- Look for Apps in the left-hand list.
- If you see Google Play Store, you can turn it on. If you do not, your Chromebook may be too old, or the organisation may have blocked it.
Turn on Google Play
Under Apps, click Google Play Store, then Turn on. Read and accept the terms, and wait for it to finish. A Play Store icon will then appear in your launcher.
Install an app
- Open Play Store from the launcher.
- Search for the app name.
- Check the developer name and reviews, then click Install.
- When it has finished, click Open, or find it in the launcher.
Is it safe?
- Only install from the Play Store and only from developers you trust.
- Be wary of apps that ask for lots of permissions that they should not need.
- Do not enter bank or payment details in an app you do not trust.
Apps that do not work well
Android apps are made for phones, so some look odd on a laptop screen. If an app opens in a small window, try the maximise button or check app settings. If an app will not work, many have a website version that you can open in Chrome.
Remove an app
Right-click the app in the launcher and choose Uninstall.
Storage
Android apps take up storage, so remove those you do not use. See our storage guide.
Updates
Apps update from the Play Store. Open it, click your profile picture and choose Manage apps and device.
