Changing the Wi-Fi network on a Nest speaker or display

If you have a new router, a new Wi-Fi name or a new password, your Nest speaker or display needs to be told. You do this in the Google Home app on your phone. Apps change their wording and menus from time to time, so what you see may differ slightly from the steps below.

Before you begin

  • Connect your phone to the new Wi-Fi network first.
  • Have the new Wi-Fi password ready.
  • Stand reasonably near the speaker. It is easier if the speaker is switched on and still powered.

Change the network

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap the speaker or display you want to change.
  3. Tap the Settings cog (top right).
  4. Look for the Wi-Fi entry. It is usually called Wi-Fi under device information or settings.
  5. Choose the option to forget the old network, then follow the prompts to choose the new one and enter the password.

Google can change where this option sits. If you cannot see it, look under the device settings for anything mentioning Wi-Fi or network, and check Google's Nest help page for your exact model.

If the speaker is offline and cannot be reached

When the old Wi-Fi no longer exists, the app may not be able to change settings. In that case you may need to remove the speaker from the app and set it up again as a new device. See our setup guide. Do this carefully: you may lose settings such as room names, but your Google account stays safe.

Tips

  • Most Nest speakers use ordinary home Wi-Fi. If your router offers separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, try the 2.4GHz one if there are connection problems.
  • Do the change for every speaker and display, one by one.

When to get more help

Get help if the speaker cannot find your new network, keeps asking for the password again, or you cannot see it in the app any more. Factory resetting is a last resort and wipes the device settings, so check with us first.

Did this help? If you are still stuck, email Vision Tech and tell us what you can see on the screen. Menus and button names can differ slightly between versions and makes. If something does not match, stop and ask rather than guess.
